# Monaco terrain data

The grid is cropped from the Mapzen Terrarium tile `12/2132/1493.png`. The AWS tile response identifies its source as `eudem/eudem_dem_5deg_n40e005.tif` (EU-DEM v1.1).

> Mapzen; Europe terrain data produced using Copernicus data and information funded by the European Union - EU-DEM layers.

The [AWS Terrain Tiles registry](https://registry.opendata.aws/terrain-tiles/) links its license information to the [Mapzen attribution guide](https://github.com/tilezen/joerd/blob/master/docs/attribution.md). The EU-DEM v1.1 [EEA product metadata](https://sdi.eea.europa.eu/catalogue/datahub/api/records/3473589f-0854-4601-919e-2e7dd172ff50/formatters/xsl-view?approved=true&language=eng&output=pdf) states that Copernicus Land Monitoring Service products are full, open and free. It requires source attribution, a clear statement of adaptations or modifications, and no implication of official EU endorsement. The EEA [reuse notice](https://www.eea.europa.eu/en/legal-notice) notes that third-party material can have separate conditions.

This project adapts the tile by cropping it to the modeled terrain extent, decoding Terrarium RGB values to metres, rounding heights to 0.1 m, and transforming sample coordinates into game-local x/z axes. The bundled source tile, compact grid, and [provenance metadata](monaco-terrain-provenance.json) preserve the URL, source header, response metadata, and checksum. The crop can be regenerated with [`prepare-city-terrain.py`](../../../tools/prepare-city-terrain.py) using Python and Pillow.

EU-DEM is a 25 m digital surface model based on 2011 data, not a bare-earth terrain model. Its values are approximate scenery elevations; they are not surveyed road heights and must not be treated as vehicle or collision physics. This data does not describe a surveyed Monaco track. The EU is not associated with or endorsing this project.
